Play epic rap battles of history8/31/2023 ![]() Obviously if the Nazi is wrong you should be able to prove it with facts and logic! As if giving a literal neo-Nazi legitimacy by entertaining his views for even a moment is in any way helpful, and not extremely dangerous. These are the fuckheads who came out of the woodwork when, say, Richard Spencer was punched live on camera, to whine about how assaulting the guy was wrong and we should just be having a friendly debate instead. ![]() The reality is that "victory" in a debate is almost entirely subjective, most people will be far more swayed by the viewpoint they already agree with regardless of how well it's presented, and it is very possible for a skilled debater to overpower a weaker one even with terrible views and arguments purely because they are able to present them better to an audience case in point, Ben Shapiro, a grown man in his 30s using his years of media training to "dunk" on literal children whose brains haven't finished forming yet, despite the fact that actually sitting back and analyzing his arguments outside of that context generally reveals them to be inconsistent nonsense at best and outright bullshit more often than not. They'll come forward straight-faced to say "Tsk tsk, violence is never the answer! If the Nazi is wrong, you should be able to defeat him in the Marketplace of Ideas! If you can't, that clearly means your own arguments aren't as strong as you think!" As if winning a debate has ever truly been about who actually presents better arguments, and more pointedly as if whoever is able to argue a point better has anything to do with the actual merits of their views. What we're talking about here is the morons - often "centrists" or right-wingers arguing in bad faith, but also quite often liberals who don't actually have any real stakes in the situation - who will tut-tut when leftists argue in favor of or actively use deplatforming or violence against dangerous ideologies like neo-Nazis. I agree with the "debate them for the audience" strategy, I do it all the time myself. ![]() Users who break may be warned for rule offenses instead of banned, but certain offenses are ban-on-sight, and all bans are up to the mod's discretion.Įxcept that's not the kind of situation we're talking about here.
